Books-A-Palooza – Helps Spread Literacy to Children

Books a PaloozaBooks-A-Palooza at Kernersville Elementary School

We handed out books in the various classes to the students at Kernersville Elementary School on March 11, 2024.  Each student selected their own book from the various grade levels along with a bookmark from MSUMC.

The goal of our Books-A-Palooza ministry is to give every child an age-appropriate book (new or used) to take home at Christmas break and over the summer since many of these students don’t have any books at home. KES / Sedge Garden each has about 750 students, so we will need about 850 books each semester (1,700 a year). Ways you can help:

  • You can donate new or used children’s books into the container in the Commons area
  • You can donate used books for teens and adults in the Commons area to be taken to a used bookstore to be exchanged for store credit to be used to purchase children’s books
  • You can make a donation with the note Book-A-Palooza and the money will go into a designated account that will be used to purchase new or used children’s books

What is it?

  • Books-A-Palooza is a new ministry established by MSUMC Outreach Committee to help spread literacy to children at Kernersville Elementary School (a Title I/high risk school)

  • The books will be sorted by grade and books will be purchased to fill in where needed; we are going to try to keep books between $1-3, so if an individual or group would like to sponsor a class a $30 donation would be a good estimate

Book and Financial Donations can always be made. A bin will remain in the Commons area at church to collect book donations for all ages and will be emptied when full by members of the committee.  Overflow books will be kept in bins at offsite, where the books will be sorted and put into grade appropriate bins.  If there are books that cannot be used they will be taken to Ed McKay’s for store credit.

Eventually we would like to place other bins around town in restaurants, businesses, and schools.  Please let us know if you know of a place that is interested in partnering with us.

The church has set up an account for Books-A-Palooza, so people can make donations at any time and put Books-A-Palooza in the memo line.
